Rep. Neguse Announces $408,000 to Improve Roadway Safety in Gypsum and Timnath

June 7, 2024

Lafayette, CO — Today, House Assistant Minority Leader Joe Neguse announced $408,000 for the Towns of Gypsum and Timnath to develop comprehensive safety plans for their roads and streets. The funding, allocated as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, was made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Comprehensive Safety Action Plans work to significantly improve roadway safety, aiming to reduce and eliminate severe injury and fatal crashes. Action Plans utilize data analysis to characterize roadway safety problems and strengthen a community’s approach through projects and strategies that address the most significant safety risks.

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to deliver for the people of Colorado, down to every last zip code. This funding will help local leaders in Gypsum and Timnath to build safer road environments. Ultimately, these plans will help reduce and eliminate severe injuries and fatal crashes, making travel safer for residents and visitors,” said House Assistant Minority Leader Joe Neguse.

“This Safe Streets and Roads for All grant is a gamechanger for transportation safety in Timnath,” said Timnath Mayor Robert Axmacher. “It will allow us to analyze crash data, better understand community needs, and implement proven strategies like roadway design changes, public education campaigns, and policy updates - all of which can notably improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.”

“The Town of Gypsum is grateful for this planning grant support. We are eager to develop a comprehensive safety action plan that will assess roadway safety throughout our community. This funding will help us identify and implement projects and strategies to enhance both roadway and pedestrian safety, making Gypsum’s transportation routes safer for all residents,” said Gypsum Town Manager Jeremy Rietmann

The SS4A funding includes:

  • $220,000 for the Town of Timnath’s Safety Action Plan.
  • $188,000 for the Town of Gypsum’s Safety Action Plan.

The historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, enacted in November 2021, established the new Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) discretionary program, with $5 billion in appropriated funds over 5 years, 2022-2026.

Congressman Joe Neguse played a key role in crafting the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021, successfully securing the advancement of several key priorities for Colorado in the bill. Last year, Congressman Neguse announced $780,800 in funding to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries in towns along Colorado’s I-70 transportation corridor. In 2022, he joined Governor Polis and U.S. Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper in celebrating the groundbreaking of the Floyd Hill I-70 expansion project, funded by a $100,000,000 grant for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
