Youth Advisory Council
Overview:
High School students from Colorado’s 2nd district are invited to apply to join the Youth Advisory Council (YAC)! Council Members will learn about the legislative process, the composition of a Congressional office, and the ways in which citizens participate in Democracy. The YAC votes on issue areas - past year’s committees have focused on environmental, violence prevention, education, tech and AI, and many more - students assemble into committees in order to develop a policy presentation to Congressman Neguse during the annual Youth Summit. Over the course of the school year, students will meet monthly and learn about the legislative process, collaborate with each other on their policy research, and plan the annual Youth Summit, which brings together YAC members and their friends and family at the conclusion of the year to present policy research and ideas to the Congressman. Students are expected to put in effort outside of meeting times researching, planning, and developing their policy presentations.
Composition:
Students elect two co-presidents to help oversee operations for the year. They also elect two co-secretaries whose responsibilities are to liaise with YAC members, read out meeting notes, support the co-presidents as members of the executive board, and put in more time to the YAC.
For each issue area, a committee will be formed and then, each group will elect a committee chair. This individual is expected to be the point-person on the committee process, organizing the committee, communicating with the Congressman’s staff, and leading the committee throughout their preparation for the YAC summit.
The Executive Board is made up of the two co-presidents, co-secretaries, and committee chairs.
Application Process:
Any high school student in Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District may apply for Congressman Neguse’s Youth Advisory Council HERE. Upon completion of the application students will be contacted and invited to join monthly meetings.
