U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse last week introduced bipartisan legislation to increase pay permanently for federal wildland firefighters ahead of next month's expiration of a temporary pay boost.

The Lafayette Democrat, a founder of the congressional Bipartisan Wildfire Caucus, called swift passage of the Wildland Firefighter Paycheck Protection Act essential to recruit and retain the firefighters he's characterized as "forgotten first responders."

Colorado Rep. Joe Neguse (D) on Tuesday introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation that aims to both increase the salaries of federal wildland fighters and bolster wildfire preparedness.  

The Wildland Firefighter Paycheck Protection Act would seek to augment recruitment efforts, strengthen worker retention and improve employee well-being in a high-risk profession.

Rep. Joe Neguse introduced H.R.4382 with fellow Colorado Democrat Rep. Brittany Pettersen on June 27. According to a news release from Neguse’s office, the bill would expand a successful Colorado program to support rural communities nationwide.

The streets of downtown Longmont were packed Saturday morning as spectators enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Boulder County Fair Parade.

The parade is a city tradition that began over 150 years ago to drum up excitement for the Boulder County Fair, which kicks off Thursday. The route starts and ends at Roosevelt Park, 700 Longs Peak Ave., and featured 58 organizations this year.

A potential lease between Summit County, the Town of Dillon and the U.S. Forest Service would be the first in the country to allow a local municipality to build affordable housing on National Forest land. 

The county’s pathway to use forest service land began with the 2018 Farm Bill which made it possible for the USFS to repurpose underused administrative sites for housing. The county then filed paperwork with the department in 2018.

U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Lafayette, is encouraging veterans to file a claim under the PACT Act to receive compensation by Wednesday.

The PACT Act expanded veteran health care. The bill provides health care coverage to more than 3.5 million post 9/11 veterans who were exposed to burn pits or other toxins during deployment. Veterans can receive up to 12 months of backdated compensation when they begin the claiming process by Wednesday.

Alongside other western state legislators, U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse has introduced a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the U.S. Forest Service’s Secure Rural Schools and Self-Determination Program through 2023. 

This follows Neguse helping to secure a two-year extension for the program through 2023 as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021.

The Air Force has decided that U.S. Space Command's permanent headquarters will remain in Colorado Springs, instead of moving to Huntsville, Ala.

The long-awaited decision caps more than two years of wrangling by officials from both Colorado and Alabama after former President Donald Trump announced in the final days of his administration that the command's headquarters would move to Alabama.

Sen. Michael Bennet and Rep. Joe Neguse have introduced the Joint Chiefs Reauthorization Act of 2023 alongside other western state legislators in effort to better support forest and grassland restoration projects across public and private land.

When the Gypsum Town Council on Tuesday began considering whether to put lights on the town’s new skatepark, the fact that the project appears to be coming in both ahead of schedule and under budget helped sway the decision.

The $55,000 expenditure for lights received unanimous approval from the council.
