A group of Democratic lawmakers renewed calls for legislation prohibiting members of Congress from trading stock while in office during a press conference Thursday.
The lawmakers, which included Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Colorado Rep. Joe Neguse, among others, say the ban is necessary for lawmakers to regain public trust in federal officials.
“We are elected to serve the people, not stock portfolios,” said Neguse, who led the press conference.
With crews still responding to the NCAR fire that forced thousands of people to evacuate over the weekend, a panel on Wednesday stressed that these types of events are part of the growing cost of climate change in Colorado.
While the NCAR fire has been mostly contained with no damage to structures or lives lost, the early spring fire combined with the recent destruction of the Marshall fire has made the impacts of Colorado’s changing climate all the more visible to legislators and their constituents.
WASHINGTON (KDVR) — The NCAR fire is just the latest reason one lawmaker is trying to get Congress to allocate more money to wildfire prevention.

Rep. Joe Neguse and Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper sent a letter to Biden on Thursday, March 10, urging him to extend the program to include Americans who receive mail from a commercial mail agency. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Colorado's Regional Transportation District (RTD) will receive more than $53 million in funding from the American Rescue Plan, Congressmen Joe Neguse and Jason Crow announced Monday.
The $53,240,645 will be used to support day-to-day operations, cleaning and sanitization and staffing level maintenance, according to Neguse.
Superior Mayor Clint Folsom will be heading to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday – virtually, that is.
Folsom was selected to be Congressman Joe Neguse’s guest at President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union address, according to a press release Monday.
“Folks like Mayor Clint Folsom represent our country’s resilience and recovery. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastating Marshall Fire, he has shown great leadership helping communities come together, rebuild and recover,” said Neguse, D-Lafayette.
All that’s left from the original camp are wind-blown prairie grass and old building foundations.

The congressional district, which Neguse has represented since 2019, encompasses the much of the area northwest of Interstate 76, and a large portion of the Front Range west of Interstate 25. Loveland, Boulder, Fort Collins and Broomfield all fall within the district.
