Rep. Neguse Applauds President Biden’s Plan to Create Office of Gun Violence Prevention
Representatives Neguse, McBath led charge in Congress, urging President Biden in 2021 to employ whole-of-government response to the gun violence epidemic.
Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Joe Neguse, Vice-Chair of the U.S. House Gun Violence Prevention, issued the following statement applauding reports that the White House is establishing an Office of Gun Violence Prevention:
“In 2023, there have been more mass shootings than days in the year. It’s long past time we confront this crisis with the urgency it requires, ensuring that we are investing in every solution at our disposal to reduce incidents of gun violence, protecting our kids and our families, and building safer communities. I applaud President Biden for heeding the calls of lawmakers across Congress and working to establish an Office of Gun Violence Prevention.”
“Communities in my home state of Colorado are far too familiar with traumatic incidents of gun violence. It’s imperative that we continue to take action to create a country free from the scourge of gun violence. Our work is not over, but this news makes historic progress toward saving lives.”
Last Congress, in 2021, Rep. Neguse and Congresswoman Lucy McBath (D-GA), led a group of House Democrats in a letter to President Biden reiterating their request that he establish an Interagency Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention; the lawmakers also sent a similar letter in the spring of 2021. Rep. Neguse is also a proud cosponsor of H.R. 1699, the Office of Gun Violence Prevention Act of 2023.
