Nominations Now Open For Rep. Neguse Environmental Scholarship Award
Washington D.C.—Today, Congressman Joe Neguse announced a new environmental scholarship award to honor college students within Colorado’s Second Congressional District, whose clear passion, scholastic excellence, and desire for service display the potential for environmental vision and leadership. The Mollie H. Beattie Congressional Award for Distinguished Environmental Scholarship is named after Mollie H. Beattie, an outward bound instructor, forester, and leader with a lifelong dedication to the natural world who became the first woman to serve as the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under President Bill Clinton. Beattie excelled as a public servant through her ability to communicate complex topics in terms that were both clear and passionate, displaying incredible bravery to stand up for her beliefs and speak for the animals and wildlife that could not speak for themselves.
“Mollie fought to protect wildlife habitat and wilderness through honesty, compassion, and courage,” said Congressman Joe Neguse. “I want this award to recognize student leaders who share her dedication to the environment and inspire them to continue to serve the earth and all its inhabitants with the same determination displayed by Mollie.”
Beginning this 2019-2020 academic year, any university faculty member throughout 2nd Congressional District will have the opportunity to nominate undergraduate college students focused on the areas of environmental studies; natural resources conservation and management; biology and ecological sciences; and/or wildlife, forestry, habitat, and wilderness management – either within their related sciences or within the studies of environmental law or policy.
