Neguse Votes to Repeal 2002 AUMF
Washington D.C.—Today, Congressman Joe Neguse, a member of the Congressional War Powers Caucus, voted to pass H.R. 256, which repeals the Authorization of Military Force (AUMF) Against Iraq Resolution of 2002.
“Only Congress has the Constitutional power to declare war,” said Congressman Joe Neguse. “Ten years after the end of the Iraq War, this AUMF still remains on the books – leaving the door open for future presidents to use it as the basis to start a new war, or expand a current one, without Congress’s explicit authorization. Today I voted to repeal this outdated AUMF, a step that will help restore the Constitutional separation of powers and put a stop to endless wars.”
The provisions in this bill passed the House twice in the 116th Congress. After passing the House again today, the bill – which is supported by the Biden-Harris Administration – now goes to the Senate.
