Neguse Secures $1 Million in Federal Funding for Colorado State-Adams State Joint Mechanical Engineering

March 15, 2022

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Joe Neguse has secured $1 million in federal funding to create a joint bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering between Adams State University and Colorado State University. The program will expand STEM Education to historically underserved students in rural Colorado, and is supported by several Colorado-based companies.

In total, Congressman Neguse secured over $7 million in funding for community projects in his district that will be funded by Congress in FY 2022. The omnibus package passed the House and Senate last week.

“The CSU-Adams State joint mechanical engineering program represents a significant step towards expanding opportunities for all Colorado students, providing access to top-tier programs and faculty to our rural communities, and teaching sought-after skills that will help our kids find good jobs,” said Congressman Joe Neguse. “I am proud to support this important program, and I am thrilled to secure this federal funding.”

“We’re tremendously excited to partner with Adams State University to deliver a mechanical engineering degree in Alamosa,” said CSU President Joyce McConnell. “Bringing a degree program from CSU’s Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering to students in Alamosa gives those students more choices for their future, which is a fundamental part of our land grant mission to educate the future leaders of our state.”

The proposed program seeks to create a supportive environment for diverse and underserved students to access a local pathway for students to earn an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering. A memorandum of understanding is underway between Colorado State University and Adams State University.

Neguse submitted several Community Project Funding requests to the Appropriations Committee, and has had remarkable success advocating for projects in Colorado’s 2nd District. The Adams State-CSU joint mechanical engineering program is among the 10 Neguse-sponsored projects to be funded in FY2022.
