House Passes Rep. Neguse Bill Honoring Women’s Suffrage with Movement on National Mall
Lafayette, CO — Congressman Joe Neguse applauded the U.S. House’s passage of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Location Act, a bill he introduced to ensure that Washington, D.C’s first outdoor monument honoring the women’s suffrage movement is granted a location on the National Mall. This legislation follows a successful effort Congressman Neguse led in 2020 to enact legislation that authorized the construction of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument on federal lands.
“I am proud to see our bipartisan, bicameral bill to honor the women’s suffrage movement through a monument on the National Mall pass the House of Representatives. This effort has been locally-led from the start and is a prime example of what we can accomplish by working together. It is my hope that this monument provides my young daughter and many generations to come to see themselves reflected in American history,” said Congressman Neguse.
H.R. 1318 is co-led by Representative Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) in the House of Representatives and is supported by Senators Baldwin, Blackburn, and Bennet in the U.S. Senate. Specifically, the bill authorizes a monument to commemorate and honor the women’s suffrage movement and the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution to be placed on the National Mall.
Background
In 2019, after constituents in Loveland, Colorado proposed the idea of installing the first outdoor women’s suffrage monument in Washington D.C., Congressman Neguse introduced H.R. 473. The bill authorized the Every Word We Utter Board, to select the design of and install the historic monument. Its title comes from a letter Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote to Lucretia Mott in which she said of the power of words and deeds: “Every word we utter, every act we perform, waft unto innumerable circles beyond.” H.R. 473 was signed into law in December 2020.
