Congressman Neguse Responds to the President’s Budget Proposal

February 11, 2020

Washington D.C.— Today, Congressman Joe Neguse, who represents Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District in Congress, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s budget proposal:

“The President’s budget request completely ignores the climate crisis and the needs of working families. His proposal eliminates NOAA’s Climate Competitive Research program, reducing support for high priority climate science and adaptation efforts that are essential to combating the climate crisis. Additionally, this budget includes near elimination of the Land and Water Conservation Fund, the nation’s premier conservation program which Coloradans rely on.”

“President Trump is proposing deep cuts to critical programs that impact Colorado families, including cuts to infrastructure investments, affordable housing, education, rural broadband, community development, FEMA assistance and small business. His proposal abandons our seniors with a $24 billion cut to Social Security and multi-billion-dollar cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, and eliminates both the Community Development Block Grants and HOME Investment Partnerships Program which are essential for providing affordable housing opportunities in our communities.”

“This budget is a clear statement of the President’s priorities, and shows just how little he values environmental protection, financial security or the well-being of hardworking American families. Congress must work together in a bipartisan way to fund the priorities that matter to American families and ensure the urgency of climate change is not ignored.”
