Congressman Neguse Issues Statement Regarding the Trump Administration’s Strikes on Iran
Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Joe Neguse issued the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s strikes on Iran:
“Article I of the Constitution makes clear only Congress has the power to declare war. Our framers designed the constitutional framework to ensure consequential issues of war and peace would be fully debated by lawmakers before American service-members are engaged in conflict abroad. Reclaiming such authority — which I’ve repeatedly advocated for — is critical to restoring Congress as the Article I branch of government our country’s founders intended.”
“As I’ve stated previously, I’ve long believed that Iran — the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism — cannot be permitted to develop nuclear weapons. I also share the concerns of many Americans about direct U.S. involvement in foreign wars. Any offensive military actions must first receive authorization from Congress, and the President clearly failed to seek such congressional authorization — including reportedly failing to consult with Democratic members of the Gang of Eight.”
“The administration must immediately provide critical information about the operation to Congress in a classified briefing, including the intelligence rationale, tactical considerations and legal authorities it purports to have relied upon. I’m relieved that our brave American service-members were unharmed during yesterday’s operation, and the administration must focus efforts on protecting them and American citizens, as well as redoubling diplomatic efforts to contain escalation, resolve the conflict and achieve peace.”
“If any Coloradans are currently in the Middle East and need assistance in evacuating, we encourage you to please contact our district or Washington D.C. offices, where we have dedicated personnel available to assist.”
