Congressman Joe Neguse Votes to Pass Resolution Condemning Anti-Asian Sentiment Caused by the Outbreak of Covid-19
Washington D.C.— Rep. Joe Neguse voted to pass Rep. Grace Meng's (NY-06) resolution condemning all forms of anti-Asian sentiment as related to COVID-19. Since January 2020, there has been a dramatic increase in reports of hate crimes and incidents against those of Asian descent. Over 2,500 cases related to COVID-19 anti-Asian discrimination were recorded since March.
"The President's use of anti-Asian rhetoric and his use of terms like ‘Chinese virus,’ ‘Wuhan virus,’ and ‘Kung-flu,’ are irresponsible, reckless, and threaten the safety of the Asian American community," said Congressman Joe Neguse. "Leaders must recommit to building a more inclusive, diverse, and tolerant society."
The resolution, supported by over 500 Asian American community organizations, calls on all public officials to condemn and denounce any and all anti-Asian sentiment in any form and condemns all manifestations of expressions of racism, xenophobia, discrimination, and anti-Asian sentiment. In addition, the resolution calls on federal law enforcement officials to work with state and local officials to investigate and document all incidents and threats against Asian Americans, to collect relevant data, and to hold perpetrators of such crimes accountable.
