Congressman Joe Neguse Statement on the Passing of John Lewis

July 18, 2020

Washington D.C. —Congressman Joe Neguse issued this statement on the passing of civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis late last night:

“Tonight, the country lost a true American hero. A civil rights legend. A giant whose sacrifices and relentless pursuit of justice and equality paved the road for so many.”

“One of the greatest honors of my life was serving with John Lewis in Congress. And what I will remember about him most is that he truly was the kindest man I’ve ever met.”

“Occasionally, I’d have the privilege of walking with Mr. Lewis back to the House floor after our weekly Congressional Black Caucus meetings. Every time, there wasn’t a single Capitol employee whom he didn’t greet effusively, and often by name. He’d thank the custodians and the security officers, the food service workers and the House staff — each and every one — with a smile, a warm hello, and a sincere thank you for their work. Put simply, he was such a generous, humble and decent man.”

“Rest In Peace John Lewis. We miss you so much already.”
