Assistant Leader Neguse Announces FEMA Funds to Fight Colorado’s Alexander Mountain and Stone Canyon Fires

July 31, 2024

Lafayette, CO — Today, House Assistant Minority Leader Joe Neguse welcomed Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) swift authorization for federal funding to help fight the Alexander Mountain Fire burning in Larimer County and the Stone Canyon Fire burning in Boulder County. After receiving the requests this morning and determining that the fires threatened such destruction that it would constitute a major disaster, FEMA has authorized a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG).

“Fires across Colorado’s Front Range have resulted in thousands of evacuation orders, the loss of several structures, and have already tragically claimed the life of one of our neighbors. As our brave firefighters and first responders work to contain the flames and prevent any further damage, it is critical that our federal partners bring the full force of their support to equip our families and our state,” said House Assistant Minority Leader Joe Neguse. “With that being said, I am incredibly grateful to FEMA for working to swiftly authorize a Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Alexander Mountain and Stone Canyon Fires. We will continue to work with local, state and federal officials to bring about the support needed to fight off these fires and prevent further devastation.”

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75-percent of the state’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires through the reimbursable program. These grants do not provide assistance to individual home or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage.

Fire Management Assistance Grants are provided through the President's Disaster Relief Fund and are made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; mobilization and demobilization activities; and tools, materials and supplies.
