PACT Act, Firefighter Support & More!

August 14, 2023
Newsletter

Dear Neighbors, Last week, I introduced the Wildland Firefighter Paycheck Protection Act – bipartisan, bicameral legislation to increase firefighter pay – bolstering recruitment, retention, and well-being, which will improve wildfire readiness. This bill incorporates parts of the pay provisions from Tim’s Act, my comprehensive firefighter pay and benefits legislation. Tim’s Act is named in honor of Tim Hart, a brave smokejumper from Cody, Wyoming, who tragically lost his life on May 24, 2021, while battling the Eicks Fire in New Mexico.

In 2021, President Biden enacted portions of Tim’s Act through the implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which temporarily increased firefighter pay. However, the temporary pay increase will expire on September 30th, 2023, making it necessary to pass the Wildland Firefighter Paycheck Protection Act ahead of this deadline. By permanently increasing federal firefighter pay, our federal firefighters will be better equipped to recruit and retain new hires, ensuring that firefighting forces are prepared to fight fires across the country and keep us safe.

PACT ACT 'INTENTION TO FILE' EXTENSION

Did you know that you can still apply for PACT Act benefits? Under the PACT Act, all veterans and survivors of veterans of the Vietnam, Gulf War, and post-9/11 eras who were exposed to toxic fumes, burn pits, agent orange, radiation, and other environmental hazards may be eligible for benefits. Last week the VA extended the deadline to get backdated benefits to TODAY, Monday, August 14th at 9:59 pm MT.

Don’t wait – apply today by going to VA.gov/pact.

OUT IN THE COMMUNITY

It has been wonderful visiting with folks from across Colorado’s 2nd District — from visiting with constituents at the Louisville Street Fair, spending time with folks celebrating the 75th anniversary of the PRCA Rodeo in Loveland, and speaking at the American Solar Energy Society convention in Boulder, I always enjoy interacting with the people of our community.

WHAT ELSE HAVE WE BEEN WORKING ON?
  • We held our annual Youth Advisory Council Summit to discuss the challenges facing young people in our state and country. Their commitment to public service is inspiring! Learn more here.

  • On Sunday, I visited the Timberline Fire Department to learn more about their work to keep Coloradans safe. The Timberline Fire Department was one of our FY’24 Community Project selections through the appropriations process. These projects will all positively impact our district, and we will continue to advocate for their funding. Read more about our Community Project Selections here.
