Congressman Neguse Statement on Passing of Gloria Tanner

Washington D.C.—Today, Congressman Joe Neguse, Colorado’s first and only Black Congressman, issued the following statement on the passing of Gloria Tanner, who served as the first Black woman in the Colorado State Senate.

“Today, Colorado has lost an extraordinary activist and remarkable public servant. Gloria Tanner dedicated her life to public service and to advancing opportunity and equality for all Coloradans. From early on in her career through retirement, she cultivated new leaders, ensuring that the barriers she broke left a road for others to follow. Her compassion and selflessness inspired many — myself included — and her dedication will motivate future generations for years to come.”

“On a personal note, Gloria was my friend. She was such a wonderful mentor, who played an instrumental role in my own public service career as a Regent, and now, as a Congressman. I often say that we all stand on the shoulders of giants. Gloria was one of those giants. And she will be so sorely missed. My thoughts are with her family and loved ones as they mourn her passing. May the incredible legacy she has left be a comfort to all those who knew her.”
