Rep. Neguse encourages vaccinations in African American community in new video
Rep. Joe Neguse, a Democrat from Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District, released a public service announcement video this week to encourage members of the African American community to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
The video included messages from Neguse and several Black community leaders in Colorado.
“The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and extremely effective,” Maya Wheeler, the executive director of the African Chamber of Commerce of Colorado, says in the video.
“You are doing a good deed for your community,” said Sen. Janet Buckner, who represents the 28th District in the Colorado Senate.
“COVID-19 has taken so much from so many, and getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones,” said Eula Adams, a member of the Transportation Commission of Colorado.
In the video, Neguse encourages people who are vaccinated against COVID-19 to talk to their friends and family.
A press release that accompanied the PSA states that according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 52% of Black Coloradans and 65% of white Coloradans have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

White Coloradans make up almost 70% of Colorado’s total population. The database states that African American and Black Coloradans make up 3% of Coloradans immunized. According to the CDPHE website, 3,336,388 people have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 3,067,292 Coloradans were fully vaccinated as of July 25.
COVID-19 vaccines are not yet available for children under 12.
The delta variant of the coronavirus is spreading widely in the state. The delta variant made up almost 90% of Colorado COVID-19 cases in the week of July 4, the latest week for which information is available, according to the CDPHE’s COVID-19 database.
