Rep. Neguse Announces Nearly $1 Million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Funding to Improve Cyclist Safety in Fort Collins, Colo.
Lafayette, CO — Today, Congressman Joe Neguse announced $964,480 in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding has been allocated to the City of Fort Collins to identify solutions to maximize safety and comfort for local cyclists. The Department of Transportation awarded Fort Collins with Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grants to assist the city in conducting supplemental planning and demonstration activities meant to inform improvements along transportation corridors with safety issues.
Data from the state of Colorado shows that 754 people died in traffic incidents in 2022, the most roadway deaths the state has seen in four decades. 36% of these deaths were pedestrians, motorcyclists, or bicyclists.
“Fort Collins is one of the best cycling cities in the United States. Today’s announcement of funding helps protect local cyclists, taking action to improve community welfare and ensure that everyone can navigate the city safely,” said Congressman Neguse. “Two years ago, I was proud to help lead the effort in Congress to enact the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and I am excited to see the ways in which it continues to deliver for Coloradans.”
“The City of Fort Collins is thrilled to have been awarded a Safe Streets and Roads for All grant. For our community, this funding will kick-start supplemental planning and development efforts needed to not only improve cyclist safety but ensure our bike friendly city remains top-ranked,” said Jeni Arndt, Mayor of Fort Collins.
Specifically, funding will be used by the City of Fort Collins to conduct supplemental planning and demonstration activities including a study on 27 miles of arterial roadways for solutions to maximize safety and cyclist comfort; corridor safety audits, analysis, and stakeholder engagement, and a demonstration activity to test the effectiveness of flexible posts.
The historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, enacted in November 2021, established the new Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) discretionary program, with $5 billion in appropriated funds over 5 years, 2022-2026. Rep. Neguse played a key role in the swift passage and enactment of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a monumental piece of legislation that invests in the economy, rebuilds roads and bridges and ensures American communities can compete in the 21st Century.
